From 8 to 10 September 2026, in Astana, Talgat Bolatovich Karibayev, Head of the Laboratory for Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases, and Taufik Satpekovich Tuyakov, Epizootiologist of the RSE on REM “National Reference Center for Veterinary Medicine”, participated in the Regional Seminar on Episystems and Validation of the Regional Strategy for the Eradication of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) in Central Asia, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) with the support of the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS).
The main objectives of the seminar were to promote the practical application of the episystem approach, discuss and technically validate the Regional PPR Strategy for Central Asia, and identify priority actions at the regional level.
During the seminar, representatives of the National Reference Center for Veterinary Medicine delivered a country presentation on the Republic of Kazakhstan, covering the current status of the small ruminant livestock sector, livestock movement and husbandry practices, wildlife, the current epidemiological situation regarding PPR, as well as epizootic monitoring activities conducted in the country and measures taken for the prevention, surveillance and diagnosis of the disease.
During the event, participants were briefed on the epidemiological situation and approaches to PPR control in Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Türkiye and Uzbekistan. Particular attention was given to the role of livestock movements and wildlife in the spread and maintenance of PPR virus circulation, as well as to the importance of epidemiological surveillance and laboratory diagnostics in defining the boundaries of episystems.
In addition, the working sessions addressed issues related to the identification and prioritization of PPR epistemes, improvement of epidemiological surveillance and laboratory diagnostics, vaccination, cross-border coordination, and information exchange among countries. Participants also reviewed the draft Regional Strategy for PPR Eradication, further national and regional actions, cooperation mechanisms, and potential areas of partnership aimed at achieving the goal of PPR eradication by 2030.
